Fractions are consistently one of the most challenging topics for K-8 students. But they don't have to be! The secret is making them visual, tactile, and delicious. Here are 10 proven activities that make fractions click.
1. Pizza Fractions 🍕
Make paper pizzas with different toppings. Cut into halves, thirds, quarters, eighths. Kids arrange slices to compare fractions and practice addition/subtraction.
Bonus: Order real pizza and have kids calculate what fraction they ate!
2. LEGO Fractions
Use LEGO bricks to build fraction walls. A 2x4 brick = whole, 2x2 = half, 2x1 = quarter. Kids physically see equivalent fractions and can build addition problems.
3. Measuring Cup Math
Bake something together! Following recipes requires fraction addition (1/2 cup + 1/4 cup), doubling/halving recipes practices multiplication.
What to bake: Cookies, muffins, or pancakes work perfectly.
4. Fraction War (Card Game)
Remove face cards. Players flip two cards (first is numerator, second is denominator). Largest fraction wins! Kids naturally start comparing and finding equivalent fractions.
5. Paper Folding
Give each child paper strips. Fold in half (label 1/2), fold in half again (label 1/4), again (label 1/8). Unfold to see relationship between fractions.
Advanced: Fold in thirds for more challenge.
6. Fraction Hopscotch
Draw hopscotch with fractions in each square. Call out "equivalent to 1/2!" and kids jump to 2/4, 3/6, etc. Gets bodies moving while learning!
